Kansas State University has started making temporary repairs to buildings damaged by the tornado last week that hit campus.

More than two hundred volunteers signed up with the city of Manhattan Friday to help clean up neighborhoods that suffered damages in the tornado and heavy storms Wednesday evening.

CHAPMAN — When the tornado hit the middle school, it sounded like the freight train that passed by Katrina Arensman's home every day, speeding by on its track with no intention and no means of stopping. In fact, Arensman said, she thought it was the train until her ears started popping and someone told her that what she heard was a tornado, categorized as F-3 or greater, destroying the school around them.

The tornado that struck Manhattan Wednesday night, causing millions of dollars in damage, peaked at an EF4 classification, authorities have determined.

At least 30 westside homes and two major businesses were destroyed when a fast-moving tornado swept through Manhattan late Wednesday night.
